America In Bible Prophecy?
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
It is interesting to note that America is never directly addressed in Bible prophecy. Over the last two hundred years no nation has had more global influence than the United States of America. America has arguably been the world leader in policy, industry, technology, standard of living, and human rights. She has often defended the downtrodden and upheld the ideals of freedom and human dignity. How could a nation so prominent in world politics go unmentioned in the Bible? The renowned French author, historian, and philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville visited America in 1831 to study her culture. This is what he discovered…
“I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors; in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits AFLAME WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
Of course, America has never truly been, according to a strict definition, a “Christian” nation. Her history is too marred with sin to make such a sweeping declaration. Nevertheless, for much of her history, America has been a place of refuge; a land of liberty for those who follow Jesus Christ. A place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ was often given affirmation and entitlement. Moreover, it is no secret, Western culture has, in times past, been profoundly influenced and shaped by Christian thought. These are the underlying factors to America’s greatness as well as her longevity. Unfortunately, this is no longer true. We have squandered our once great, spiritual wealth. We have willfully turned our backs to God’s moral law and shut our eyes to divine truth. Sadly, we have denied the obvious, therefore, we are destined to embrace the absurd.
“…for unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?”
President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, during a national address appointing a national day of fasting, offered this stern warning and rebuke…
“We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”
-President Abraham Lincoln
In these last days, America has blotted out the truth of Jesus Christ. Her pulpits have grown cold, blind, and fearful. Her church has become self-absorbed, worldly, and ego-centric. Hence, spiritual darkness descends like a cloud upon the culture. Consequently, America has become increasingly more intolerant of the truth. She has arrogantly torn down God’s moral law from her school houses and court-rooms. The Bible, God’s Word, is ridiculed, despised, and opposed. Intense persecution for genuine Christians, a one time unthinkable scenario in America, seems inevitable. Today, sin is exalted, promoted, and even celebrated. Perversion, vice, violence, and blasphemy are common place. False prophets, erroneous doctrines, and spiritual counterfeits abound. In fact, no nation in history has ever published and popularized more blasphemous words and false notions about Jesus Christ than the United States of America.
And soon, the spiritual “chickens are coming home to roost…”
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
As surely as America has forgotten God, God will forget America. We have blotted out the name of Jesus, and now Almighty God will blot out the name of the United States of America from under heaven. This is clearly why the United States is not mentioned by name in the last-day prophecies of the Bible. By all practical purposes, she will no longer exist.
And, no doubt, we are getting exactly what we deserve.
For those of us who are born-again, may God grant us grace to be courageous for Him in this time of spiritual upheaval. No doubt, we will have opportunities to stand for righteousness. For everyone else, while you have time, “prepare to meet thy God.”
